Biotin Won't Regrow Your Hair. Here's What It Does.

We have said it on this site more than once, and nothing has changed: biotin does not thicken the hair of someone who is not short of biotin. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements puts it as bluntly as a federal agency ever does, that the hair, skin and nail claims on these bottles are supported, at best, by a few case reports and small studies.

So why is this page here. Because there is a narrow, real version of biotin underneath the marketing, and because the pill has one powerful effect nobody warns you about, and it has nothing to do with hair.

The Short Answer

It corrects a shortage. It does not upgrade normal hair.

  1. Deficiency is the real target. NIH ODS lists thinning hair, brittle nails and a rash around the eyes, nose and mouth as signs of biotin deficiency, which is exactly where the hair story came from.
  2. In people who are not deficient, the evidence runs out. MedlinePlus states there is no good scientific evidence to support using biotin for hair loss in people with normal levels.
  3. The warning matters more than the benefit. The FDA reports that high-dose biotin can push a troponin result falsely low, and that it has received a report of a patient who died after such a result.

Who Is Actually Short of Biotin

Not many people, and that is the crux. The ODS health professional fact sheet sets an adequate intake of 30 micrograms a day for adults and describes overt deficiency as rare in well-fed populations, with the recognised causes being an inherited enzyme disorder, long-term anticonvulsant use, heavy alcohol use and months of raw egg whites.

Pregnancy is the exception, where marginal deficiency turns up more often than you would expect. Everyone else buying the bottle is treating a symptom that usually has another cause.

The most reliable thing a high-dose biotin capsule does is change what your blood test says, which is why the timing rule below is not optional.

The Part That Is Actually True

Food covers this for almost everyone, and cheaply: eggs, salmon, liver, seeds, nuts and sweet potato all carry biotin, and the ODS vitamin fact sheets treat it as one of the nutrients a normal mixed diet supplies without effort. That is the free version, and for most readers it is the whole answer.

What survives past that is smaller than the shelf suggests. A handful of old, small studies found that high doses hardened thin and brittle nails, and the clinical reference literature treats repletion in genuine deficiency as the one clearly supported use. Narrow and honest is the trade this capsule offers.

★ Coach's Pick
The one we would buy for this job

Thorne Biotin

If you are going to take biotin, take one you can dose and stop on schedule. This is a plain biotin capsule with nothing else in it, which matters because the real risk here is not the ingredient, it is losing track of how much you are taking and when you last took it. It supports skin, hair and nail health as a structure and function claim, and it will not thicken hair that was never short of biotin.
  • 8 mg of biotin per capsule as a single ingredient, so the amount is on the label rather than buried in a blend
  • 60 capsules per bottle, with the manufacturer's label directing two capsules a day
  • Far above the 30 microgram adequate intake by design, which is the point in repletion and the reason the blood test rule applies
  • Third party tested for label accuracy and contaminant limits under Thorne's published testing standard

Before You Buy

The rule that outranks everything else on this page: biotin interferes with laboratory immunoassays, and the test the FDA is most worried about is troponin, the marker used to diagnose a heart attack. It pushes some results falsely low and others falsely high, and the lab cannot see it unless someone says you take biotin.

So tell every clinician who orders blood work, and stop the capsule for several days beforehand unless you are told otherwise. Beyond that, hair thinning has many causes worth investigating properly, and supplements are not reviewed by the FDA for effectiveness before sale, so an independent test seal is the floor.

📋 Your Coach's Recommendations
1
Decide what you are actually treating.
If the goal is thicker hair with no reason to suspect a shortage, stop here and keep your money. If it is brittle nails or a documented deficiency, this is a fair thing to test.
2
Write the blood test rule on the bottle.
Stop biotin several days before any blood draw and tell the ordering clinician you take it. Put a note on the lid. This is the single most useful sentence on this page.
3
Give nails three months, then judge.
Nails grow slowly, so a fair test is roughly twelve weeks with a photo at the start. No change means stop, and if hair is the real concern, book the appointment instead of buying a second bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do hair gummies contain such enormous doses?
Because the dose is the marketing. The FDA notes that supplements sold for hair, skin and nails can contain up to 20 mg of biotin, which is hundreds of times the adequate intake, and there is no evidence that more biotin does more for hair in someone who is not deficient.
How long before blood work should I stop taking it?
Ask the ordering clinician, because it depends on the assay and your dose, and several days is a common instruction. The non-negotiable part is telling them at all, since interference is undetectable to the lab unless it is disclosed.
Can biotin cause hair loss?
There is no good evidence that it does. There is also no good evidence it grows hair in people with normal levels, which MedlinePlus states plainly. Both halves of that sentence are worth holding at the same time.
My hair is thinning and biotin is not the answer. Now what?
Then it is a medical question rather than a shopping one. Thyroid disease, iron status, medication effects, hormonal shifts and pattern hair loss all present this way, and the sensible order is to identify the cause before choosing a product.
