Depressed women more often show sadness that will not go away, crying and dwelling on bad feelings. Depressed men more often show anger, irritability, physical complaints, overwork, substance use and risky behavior. Both share low energy, poor concentration and lost interest in things they used to enjoy.</div></details><details><summary>Can I be depressed if I do not feel sad?</summary><div class="acv-a">Yes. Mayo Clinic notes that for many men sadness is not the main symptom. Headaches, digestive problems, tiredness, irritability or long-term pain can be symptoms of depression, and so can isolating yourself or seeking constant distraction.</div></details><details><summary>Why are men less likely to get help?</summary><div class="acv-a">Several reasons stack up. Many men do not recognize their symptoms as depression, downplay how much the symptoms affect them, feel it is not manly to talk about emotions, or worry that a diagnosis could harm their career or cost them respect. NIMH data show men are less likely than women to have received mental health treatment in the past year.</div></details><details><summary>What should I say at the appointment?</summary><div class="acv-a">One sentence is enough to start: I think I might be depressed. A primary care provider is a good first stop. They can rule out medical causes, discuss treatment, and refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or clinical social worker for next steps.</div></details><details><summary>Does treatment for male depression actually work?</summary><div class="acv-a">Yes. Depression, even severe depression, usually gets better with medicines, talk therapy or both. Antidepressants can take several weeks to work fully, and it may take more than one try to find the right one. When treated, male depression usually gets better.</div></details><details><summary>What should I do if someone talks about wanting to die?</summary><div class="acv-a">Take it seriously every time. Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which is free, confidential and open around the clock. If the person may act soon, call 911. Men show fewer warning signs and act more suddenly on suicidal thoughts, so do not wait for certainty.</div></details></div><div class="acv-secondary">Wondering where you stand overall? <a href="/#assessment">Take the free 5-minute Healthspan Snapshot</a> and see your strongest and weakest of six dimensions.</div></div></div>
