Mayo Clinic agrees that hard cheeses generally cause no symptoms.</li><li><b>Use lactase products.</b> Lactase tablets and drops supply the enzyme your small intestine is short of. Mayo Clinic suggests starting smaller, up to four ounces at a time, and always alongside a meal.</div></details><details><summary>Why does cheese bother me less than milk?</summary><div class="acv-a">Less lactose. NIDDK says yogurt and hard cheeses such as cheddar and Swiss are lower in lactose than other milk products, and Mayo Clinic says hard cheeses generally cause no symptoms.</div></details><details><summary>Is lactose intolerance the same as a milk allergy?</summary><div class="acv-a">No. NIDDK says a milk allergy is an immune system disorder and lactose intolerance is a digestive one. If dairy brings hives, swelling or breathing trouble rather than bloating and gas, that is an allergy question for a doctor.</div></details><details><summary>Can I develop this later in life?</summary><div class="acv-a">That is the usual pattern. Mayo Clinic says primary lactose intolerance, the most common type, appears when lactase production falls off sharply by adulthood, and that the condition usually shows up in adulthood rather than in babies and young children.</div></details><details><summary>Do I need calcium supplements if I cut back on dairy?</summary><div class="acv-a">Ask a doctor or dietitian first. NIDDK says to talk with them about whether you are getting the nutrients you need, and lists calcium foods that contain no lactose, including canned salmon, leafy greens, almonds, tofu and fortified juices.</div></details><details><summary>Why do I get symptoms after food that is not dairy?</summary><div class="acv-a">Because lactose is added to a lot of it.
