The symptoms clearing is the disease behaving exactly as described.</p><p><strong>I will mention it at my checkup next month.</strong> TIAs most often occur hours or days before a stroke. The window for prevention is now, not next month.</p><p><strong>I will just drive myself in.</strong> Ambulance crews start life-saving treatment on the way, and can respond if symptoms return behind the wheel. <strong>It was only a dizzy spell.</strong> Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or trouble seeing are on the CDC's stroke sign list. A brief blockage cuts blood flow to part of the brain, causing stroke symptoms that usually last only minutes and leave no permanent damage. The mechanism is the same as an ischemic stroke. Only the duration is different.</div></details><details><summary>How long do TIA symptoms last?</summary><div class="acv-a">Usually a few minutes. Most symptoms disappear within an hour, and only rarely do they last up to 24 hours. However long they last, the event needs immediate medical attention.</div></details><details><summary>My symptoms went away completely. Do I still need the ER?</summary><div class="acv-a">Yes. A TIA is a sign of a serious condition that will not go away without medical help, and TIAs most often occur hours or days before a stroke. A fast evaluation is the chance to find and treat the cause before that happens.</div></details><details><summary>Can I have more than one TIA?</summary><div class="acv-a">Yes. You may have more than one, and the symptoms can be similar or different depending on which part of the brain is involved. Having had one or more TIAs makes a future stroke much more likely, which is why evaluation matters so much.</div></details><details><summary>Who is most at risk of a TIA?</summary><div class="acv-a">Risk rises with age, especially after 55, and men have a slightly higher risk. Family history and a prior TIA raise it further. The big treatable risks are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and inactivity.</div></details><details><summary>How do I lower my risk after a TIA?</summary><div class="acv-a">Work with your care team on the treatable risks. Control blood pressure and cholesterol, manage diabetes, do not smoke, get about 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days, limit alcohol, and keep regular medical checkups. Treating the cause a TIA reveals is how a future stroke gets prevented.</div></details></div><div class="acv-secondary">Wondering where you stand overall? <a href="/#assessment">Take the free 5-minute Healthspan Snapshot</a> and see your strongest and weakest of six dimensions.</div></div></div>
