<div class="ac-answer"><div class="aa-eyebrow">What the evidence actually says</div><h2 class="aa-head">Four habits do most of the work against skin aging, and all four are about the sun. Limit your time in it between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., use a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, cover up with a brimmed hat, woven clothing and UV blocking sunglasses, and skip tanning entirely. <p>Skin gets thinner, paler and less stretchy with age. That much is written into the biology: elastic fibers and collagen decline, hormones shift, and blood vessels grow more fragile. None of that is on your to-do list.</p>
<p>The part that is on your list is the sun. It is the single largest outside contributor to how old your skin looks, and it is the one input you can actually change starting this afternoon. Here are the four habits, in order.</p>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">1</div><div><div class="q">Where the damage comes from</div><h3>The Sun Is Doing Most of the Aging</h3></div></div></div>
<p>Ultraviolet light damages skin cells. A short overdose is a sunburn. The long version, according to the <a href="https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/skin-care/skin-care-and-aging" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Institute on Aging</a>, adds up into changed texture, premature aging, wrinkles and sometimes skin cancer. Age spots are described the same way: flat brown marks from years of sun exposure.</p>
<figure class="ac-figure"><img src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/8154672/pexels-photo-8154672.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&w=800&h=300&fit=crop" alt="A woman looking closely at her skin in a hand mirror" width="800" height="300" loading="lazy" decoding="async"><figcaption>Sun damage shows up as texture change, age spots and wrinkles long before anything hurts.</figcaption></figure>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">2</div><div><div class="q">Habit one</div><h3>Move Your Outdoor Time Off the Peak Hours</h3></div></div></div>
<p>In the continental United States the sun's UV rays are strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daylight saving time, the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/skin-cancer/sun-safety/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CDC</a> notes. They also reach you on cloudy days and bounce off water, cement, sand and snow. Shifting a walk or a round of golf to early or late is free protection.</p>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">3</div><div><div class="q">Habit two</div><h3>Sunscreen Works on a Clock, Not a Whim</h3></div></div></div>
<p>Look for broad spectrum on the label and an SPF of 15 or higher, put it on 15 to 30 minutes before you go out, and use a thick layer on every bit of exposed skin. Reapply at least every two hours, and immediately after swimming, sweating or toweling off.</p>
<div class="ac-callout"><div class="n">Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.</div><div class="d">That is the whole argument for these four habits in one sentence. The same exposure that ages your skin is the exposure that raises your risk.</div><div class="c">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2026</div></div>
<div class="ac-band hype"><div class="inner"><div class="big">4</div><div><div class="q">Habits three and four</div><h3>Fabric and Shade Do What Lotion Cannot</h3></div></div></div>
<p>A hat with a brim all the way round shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. Tightly woven fabric protects best, dry beats wet, and darker colors may protect more. Sunglasses that block UVA and UVB shield your eyes and the thin skin around them. And skip tanning beds, sunlamps and tanning pills outright.</p>
<figure class="ac-figure"><img src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/18353019/pexels-photo-18353019.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&w=800&h=300&fit=crop" alt="People under a large beach umbrella on a sunny day with a sun hat nearby" width="800" height="300" loading="lazy" decoding="async"><figcaption>Shade, a brim and woven fabric cover the places sunscreen is most often missed or rubbed off.</figcaption></figure>
<div class="ac-band"><div class="inner"><div class="big">5</div><div><div class="q">The monthly habit</div><h3>Check Your Own Skin, Once a Month</h3></div></div></div>
<p>Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, the <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/types/skin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Cancer Institute</a> reports, and it is rarely painful. Once a month, look for a new growth, a sore that will not heal, or a mole that is asymmetric, irregularly bordered, multi-colored, wider than a pencil eraser, or changing. Anything unusual goes to a doctor.</p>

<div class="ac-faq"><h2>Frequently Asked Questions</h2><details><summary>Which four habits slow skin aging most?</summary><div class="a">Limiting time in the sun during peak hours, using a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, covering up with a hat, woven clothing and UV blocking sunglasses, and avoiding tanning altogether. All four come straight from the NIA's skin care guidance.</div></details><details><summary>What SPF do I actually need?</summary><div class="a">SPF 15 or higher, and it should say broad spectrum so it filters both UVA and UVB. A higher number filters more, but reapplying on schedule matters more than chasing the number.</div></details><details><summary>How often should sunscreen go back on?</summary><div class="a">At least every two hours while you are outside, and right away after swimming, sweating or rubbing your skin with a towel.</div></details><details><summary>Do antiaging creams help?</summary><div class="a">The NIA advises skepticism. Many are regulated as cosmetics rather than drugs, so they are not required to be tested in humans, and some have contained heavy metals. Ask a dermatologist or your primary care doctor before buying.</div></details><details><summary>Why is my skin so dry and itchy now?</summary><div class="a">Aging skin produces less oil and sweat. Drinking too little water, sun exposure, dry air, smoking, hot showers and heavy soap use all make it worse. Daily moisturizer, mild soap and warm rather than hot water help.</div></details><details><summary>Is this medical advice?</summary><div class="a">No. This article is educational and is not a substitute for your clinician. See a doctor about any new growth, a sore that will not heal, or a mole that is changing.</div></details></div>
