You turn the pillow to the cool side, slide a foot out from under the blanket, and still lie there faintly overheated while sleep refuses to come. That restlessness is not all in your head. Falling asleep depends on your body shedding heat, and when that cooling stalls, sleep stalls with it.

One amino acid keeps surfacing in that conversation: glycine. The Sleep Foundation reports that glycine taken before bed appears to lower core body temperature, the very drop that normally ushers you toward sleep. It will not knock you out like a sleeping pill, but the mechanism is genuinely real, and it is worth understanding before you either dismiss the idea outright or rush to buy it.

Why Your Body Has to Cool Down First

Sleep begins with a temperature drop. A Cleveland Clinic sleep specialist explains that your core body temperature is meant to fall to its lowest point during sleep as part of your circadian rhythm, and that if it cannot drop far enough because you are too warm, you will not get the refreshing rest you need.

That cool-down actually starts before you are asleep. Blood shifts toward the skin and the hands and feet to release heat, and core temperature slides downward. When a warm room, a warm body or a racing mind blocks that release, the slide flattens and the doorway to sleep stays shut a little longer.

What Glycine Has to Do With It

Glycine is not exotic. The Sleep Foundation describes it as an amino acid that helps build collagen and other proteins and also acts as a signal in the brain. In animal studies, giving glycine lowered core body temperature and raised serotonin, a chemical tied to sleep regulation. Those experiments were done in rats rather than people, which is a real limitation, but they point to a plausible route by which a simple amino acid could touch the sleep system at all.

The working theory follows from that. By helping core temperature ease down and supporting serotonin, glycine may shorten the runway to sleep. In the small human trials, people with sleep complaints who took it reported falling asleep faster and feeling less foggy the next day, though the push is gentle rather than sedating.

What the Studies Actually Found

The human evidence is thin but pointed. Across a few small trials, roughly 3 grams of glycine taken before bed improved people's own ratings of their sleep and shortened the time it took them to fall asleep. That is a real signal, and it is the number nearly every glycine product is built around.

Even so, these were subjective ratings from a small number of people. A shorter time to fall asleep in a handful of volunteers is encouraging, but it is a long way from proof that glycine reliably fixes poor sleep across the wider population. Bigger, independent trials would need to repeat the finding before anyone could call it settled science rather than a promising early lead.

The caveat

The Part the Marketing Skips

Here is what the label will not tell you. The Sleep Foundation points out that only a handful of small human studies exist, and that some of them included researchers who worked for a company selling glycine supplements. That does not make the results false, but it means the case is nowhere near settled.

Glycine is also sold outright as a cure for insomnia, and the evidence does not support that. It may help some people drift off a little sooner. It is not a treatment for a genuine sleep disorder, and anyone lying awake night after night deserves a real evaluation rather than a supplement, because conditions like sleep apnea will not budge for an amino acid.

How to Use It Sensibly

Start with food. Glycine is plentiful in bone broth, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy and beans, and most people already take in a few grams a day without trying. A protein-rich dinner and a genuinely cool, dark bedroom quietly do much of the work a capsule promises, and neither one carries a label warning or a monthly cost.
