You Cannot Feel Whether Your Stomach Acid Is Low

You cannot feel the difference between low stomach acid and the far more common causes of the same symptoms. Nobody can. So the checklist starts with the things you can actually check.

★ The Coach's Plan

The Stomach Acid Checklist

Four steps. Three of them cost nothing.

1
Match your symptoms against the real list
The plan prints the list clinicians actually work from.
2
Check the medicines before the supplements
The plan names the everyday ones that sit on that list.
3
Know the signs that need a doctor now
The plan prints the signals that should not wait.
4
Add acid support after the first three

Three things the low acid theory leaves out

What your symptoms actually point to. Which medicines are already on the list. And the one thing no capsule can settle for you. All of it sourced, all of it below.

↓
1

The symptom list you matched is not proof

Here is the list, from NIDDK. Pain, a burning feeling or discomfort in the upper abdomen. Feeling full too soon while eating. Feeling uncomfortably full after a small amount of food. Bloating, nausea or belching.

Read it again and notice what it does not say. It does not say low acid. It says indigestion, which NIDDK treats as a group of symptoms, not a cause. It even separates heartburn out as its own condition.

Most chronic cases turn out to be functional dyspepsia. NIDDK describes it as a disorder of how the gut and brain work together. It is real and it has real treatment. No capsule identifies it for you.

The tell
A test you can pass by reading a list online is not a test. It is a description of how many people feel after dinner.
2

The causes already sitting in your cabinet

NIDDK names medicines that can cause this outright. The list is ordinary. Certain antibiotics. Pain relievers known as NSAIDs. Iron supplements. Bone medicines. GLP-1 medicines. Steroids.

It also names peptic ulcers and infections such as H. pylori. Those are found with tests. They are treated, not managed with a supplement trial.

Then there is the plain stuff. MedlinePlus lists eating too much or too fast. High fat foods. Eating while stressed. Smoking, alcohol and being tired. It also says to see a provider if this lasts more than two weeks.

The medicine list comes before the supplement list. The plan prints both, in order.
3

What a capsule can and cannot settle

This is where the aisle overpromises. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements states it plainly: the FDA does not determine whether dietary supplements are effective before they are marketed.

Quality seals from groups such as NSF International and US Pharmacopeia mean something narrow. They say a product was properly made and holds what the label says. ODS adds that they do not guarantee it is safe or that it works.

ODS also asks you to tell every provider what you take. Keep a written record of it. That is the opposite of self diagnosing from a bottle. It is the order the plan follows.

Free first
Slower meals, smaller portions and a week of notes cost nothing. They settle more of this than any bottle. Start there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does low stomach acid exist?
It does, and clinicians look for it in specific cases. It is not something a symptom quiz can confirm. The symptoms overlap with far more common causes, and NIDDK lists those first.
Can I test my stomach acid at home?
The kitchen tests going around online are not diagnostic. If you want a real answer, ask your clinician for a real test.
Should I try antacids instead?
That is a clinician's call. MedlinePlus notes that indigestion can be a sign of a more serious problem. It also notes you may need medicine for the symptoms. Both are reasons to be seen.
Who should skip betaine and pepsin?
The label warns against use with a history of hypersensitivity to any ingredient. If you are pregnant or nursing, ask your health professional first. If you have an ulcer, or take NSAIDs or acid reducing medicine, clear it with your prescriber.
