NHLBI says extreme tiredness is often the first symptom of heart valve disease, ahead of fainting, breathing difficulty and chest pain. Most fatigue has other causes. But if it comes with a drop in what you can do in a day, AHA asks you to raise it rather than absorb it.</div></details><details><summary>What does it mean if my doctor heard a murmur?</summary><div class="acv-a">It means a sound worth explaining, not a diagnosis. Cleveland Clinic says providers can often hear a heart murmur through a stethoscope and calls it a key sign of aortic stenosis. An echocardiogram is the test that shows whether the valve is narrowed and by how much.</div></details><details><summary>How old do you have to be to get aortic stenosis?</summary><div class="acv-a">AHA says it most often affects older adults and usually begins after age 60 as calcium builds on the valve, though symptoms may not appear until the 70s or 80s. Cleveland Clinic says it is common in people over 65. Some people are born with a bicuspid valve, which raises the risk earlier.</div></details><details><summary>Can I just take medication instead of having the valve replaced?</summary><div class="acv-a">Not as a substitute. Cleveland Clinic says medications treat symptoms and related problems such as blood pressure or heart rhythm, but cannot keep the stenosis from getting worse, and calls replacing the valve the best treatment.</div></details><details><summary>What happens if severe aortic stenosis is left untreated?</summary><div class="acv-a">Cleveland Clinic says most people do not survive more than a few years without treatment once it becomes severe or critical, and that there is a risk of dying suddenly. With timely treatment the outlook is good or excellent, with lifelong follow-up.</div></details><details><summary>Do I need open heart surgery to fix it?</summary><div class="acv-a">Not always. Cleveland Clinic describes transcatheter aortic valve replacement, which threads a catheter-based device through an artery to your heart without surgery. Some people go home the same day or the next. Surgical replacement usually means several days in hospital and several weeks to recover.</div></details></div><div class="acv-secondary">Wondering where you stand overall? <a href="/#assessment">Take the free 5-minute Healthspan Snapshot</a> and see your strongest and weakest of six dimensions.</div></div></div>
